Why is a satisfied CCJ still showing as outstanding?

Updated over 2 weeks ago

A satisfied CCJ still showing as outstanding is a common issue and typically occurs because the courts do not automatically notify Credit Reference Agencies (CRAs) like Experian when a CCJ has been satisfied (paid).

To get your profile updated, you must proactively obtain proof of satisfaction and payment, and then submit this evidence directly to Experian for review and update. For more detailed information, read below:

The reporting gap between courts and CRAs:

When you pay off a CCJ, you or your legal representative should inform the court that the judgement has been satisfied. The court will then mark their records accordingly. However, this update from the court system to the CRAs (who collect data for your credit profile) is not always automatic or immediate.

As a result, your Experian credit report (and consequently, your Capitalise profile) may not reflect the updated "satisfied" status right away, or in some cases, at all, unless you take proactive steps.

Why it's necessary to update the status:

An "outstanding" CCJ has a far more negative impact on your business credit score and your ability to access finance than a "satisfied" one. Even though a satisfied CCJ remains on your record for six years, having it marked as paid demonstrates that you fulfilled your obligation, which is viewed much more favourably by lenders and suppliers.

What to do if your satisfied CCJ still shows as outstanding:

To get your business credit profile updated, you will need to actively provide proof to Experian:

1. Obtain proof of Satisfaction from the Court:

  • After paying a CCJ, you should receive, or apply for, a Certificate of Satisfaction from the court that issued the judgement. This is your official proof that the debt has been paid in full.

  • If you don't have it, contact the relevant County Court directly to request confirmation that the judgement is marked as satisfied on their records.

2. Gather evidence of payment:

Collect clear evidence that you have paid the debt. This could include:

  • Bank statements showing the payment.

  • Receipts or payment confirmations from the creditor.

  • A letter from the creditor confirming the debt has been settled.

3. Contact Experian directly with evidence:

  • You will need to submit this proof directly to Experian. Capitalise cannot update the status of a CCJ on your behalf, as we display the data provided by Experian.

  • Visit the official Experian UK website. Look for their "Dispute" or "Corrections" section for business credit reports. They will have a process for submitting evidence to update the status of a CCJ. You can visit this page Experian/business-credit-information

  • Clearly state that you are requesting an update to the status of a CCJ from "outstanding" to "satisfied" and provide all your supporting documentation.

4. Monitor your profile:

After submitting your evidence to Experian, monitor your business credit profile on Capitalise. It may take some time for Experian to process your request and update their records, which will then reflect on your Capitalise profile.
